Doris Elpers Obituary

Doris (McCleary) Elpers passed away 8/13/2019 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born on January 9, 1925 to the late Walter and Effie (Wilson) McCleary in Elberfeld, IN. Doris graduated from Elberfeld High School in 1943 and attended Deaconess School of Nursing. Doris married Robert H. Elpers in Fort Myers, Florida on February 24, 1945.

Doris and Bob were founding members of Holy Cross Catholic Church and received the 2014 Simon Brute Award. Doris was a member of the Holy Cross Alter Society, Psi Iota Xi philanthropic Sorority and the Princeton Hospital Pink Ladies Association. In addition, she was a member of the Evansville Country Club and the Women's Golf Association. Her other hobbies included tennis, biking, quilting, drawing and gardening.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Elpers, her parents, and her sisters; Geraldine (McCleary) Georges Freeman, Eileen (McCreary) Volkman, Blanche (McCleary) Johnson, and Joyce (McCleary) Emge Horn.

Surviving are her daughters, Pamela (James) Betz of Fort Branch, Indiana, Karen (Edward) Spartz of Montgomery, Texas, and Nancy (Byron) Berry of League City, Texas. Grandchildren include Scott (Laura) Betz of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Katherine (Steve) Jones of Evansvile Indiana, Jessica (Brad) Bohrer. of Zionsville, Indiana, Claire (Betz) Temple of Bloomington, Indiana, Allison (Spartz) Moore of Carmel, Indiana, Dr. Bradley (Jennifer) Spartz of The Woodlands, Texas, and step-grandson, Matthew (Jennifer) Berry of Raleigh, North Carolina. Great-grandchildren include Will and Kate Betz, Shelby, Cameron and Caroline Jones, Max, Evan, Jack and Blake Bohrer, Veronica and Jerome Tempel, Jacob and Lucas Moore, Sydney and Elaine Spartz and Grant and Claire Berry.

Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday August 23 and 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday August 24 at Stodghill Funeral Home, Fort Branch, Indiana. Services will be at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 202 S. Church Street, Fort Branch, IN with Father Kenneth Betz officiating. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Church, 305 Walnut St., Fort Branch, IN 47648.
