John R. Schmits, 76, of Elberfeld, IN, formerly of Fort Branch, IN, passed away at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN on November 25, 2018. He was born to the late Victor and Helen (Smith) Schmits in Princeton, IN on January 22, 1942.
John is of the Catholic faith and enjoyed going to many catholic churches. He also enjoyed going to car shows. He was a retired forklift driver for Whirlpool where he spent over 30 years, and also served in the U. S. Army Reserve. John loved to help people and donated to many charities. He also donated 72 pints of blood at the American Red Cross from 1995 to 2014 and was an organ donor.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers; Carl and Jerry Schmits.
He is survived by his 3 children; Christina Schmits of Boonville, IN, Michael (Danyelle) Schmits of Evansville, IN, and Debra (Charles “Ed”) Smith of Elberfeld, IN, a brother; William Schmits of Sebree, FL, sisters-in-law; Phyllis Schmits of Fort Branch, IN and Elaine Schmits of Evansville, IN, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Fort Branch, IN at 11:00 a.m. with Fathers Tony Ernst and Ambrose Wanyonyi as co-celebrants. Rosary service will be on Friday, November 30, 2018 at Holy Cross Catholic Church at 10:40 a.m. Visitation will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations can be made to Evansville Rescue Mission, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, or The Wounded Warriors Foundation.
