Alvin J. Tieken, known to many as Al, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, at the age of 86. A lifelong educator and advocate for Catholic education, Al devoted his career to teaching and leadership in the school systems of southern Indiana.
He began his teaching journey in 1959, educating students in science at schools including Ferdinand, Memorial, and Haubstadt until 1969. He later taught at the Latin School in Evansville from 1969 to 1972 and at Mater Dei High School from 1972 to 1977. His commitment to education led him to pursue advanced degrees, earning a Master's from Indiana State University in Terre Haute and a Doctorate in Education from Indiana University in 1981.
From 1978 to 1987, Al served as Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Evansville, where his leadership helped shape the academic and spiritual lives of countless students and educators.
Al married Connie Miller on December 27, 1966. They shared many happy years together until her passing in 1998. In January 2001, he married Jeanne Budig Tieken, with whom he shared a love of travel and adventure. Al delighted in recounting stories from their journeys around the world. He was also an avid gardener and a passionate basketball fan.
Al will be remembered for his deep faith, love of learning, and the kindness he extended to everyone he met.
