Anthony J. Schmitt, 87, of Haubstadt, IN passed away on Mar. 8, 2011 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was born on Aug. 10, 1923 in Evansville, IN to the late Adam and Tillie (Elpers) Schmitt. Anthony was a retired farmer and was a member of the St. James Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the Haubstadt American Legion Post # 194, and the Fort Branch, VFW Post #2714. He was also a member of the Haubstadt Knights of Columbus. He is preceded in death by a daughter Doris Schmitt and 2 brothers Frederick and Ivan Schmitt. He is survived by his wife, Magdalen (Hoefling) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, 7 children and their spouses, Donna (Sid) Hayden of Carmel, IN, Dr. Randy Schmitt of Evansville, IN, Annette (Joe) Bean of Bloomington, IN, Karen (Tom) Newmaster of Elberfeld, IN, Elaine (Dave) Rexing of Haubstadt, IN, Brian (Joyce) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Krista (Pat) Gick of Fort Branch, IN, 2 sisters Mary Jane Tenbarge of Haubstadt, IN, Rosalee Scheller of Poseyville, IN, 26 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. A mass of Christian burial will be conducted on Saturday, Mar. 12, 2011 at 9:00 AM at the St. James Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN, Father Kenneth Betz and Father John Boeglin will be co-celebrants. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, Mar. 11, 2011 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Stodghill Funeral Home located on Hwy. 168 West in Fort Branch, IN and again on Saturday, from 8:00 AM until service time at the church. Military services will be conducted at the graveside on Saturday by the American Legion Post #194 and the VFW Post 2714. The family request that donations be made to the St. James Steeple Fund, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
