Anthony M. Schmitt, 81, of Cynthiana, IN passed away at Columbia Nursing Home in Evansville, IN on Sunday, Feb. 26th, 2006. He was born to the late Bernard and Gertrude (Gries) Schmitt in Posey County on Dec. 17th, 1924. Tony was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN and was a World War II veteran. He was a farmer and dairyman for most of his life and was a DeKalb Dealer for 25 years. Tony belonged to the Fort Branch VFW Post 2714, the Haubstadt American Legion, St. Vincent DePaul, and Dairyman Inc. Besides his parents he is also preceded in death by 5 brothers and 1 sister, Leo, Joe, Wilfred, and Ed and Raymond Schmitt, and Margaret Halbig. He is survived by his wife Rita C. (Elpers) Schmitt, 11 children, Anthony E.(Margaret) Schmitt of St. Wendel, IN, Micheal O.(Mary) Schmitt of Jasper, IN, Imogene Kurre(Don) of North Platt Neb., Maggie(Steven) Nottingham of Poseyville, IN, Joe(Millie) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Walter (Sherry) Schmitt of Fort Branch, IN, Mary Ann(Steve) Nelson of Fort Branch, IN, Annette(Sam) Scott of Owensville, IN, Diana(Alan) Schmitt of Poseyville, IN Cindy Schmitt of Poseyville, IN, and Jon (Beth)Schmitt of Fort Branch IN. Tony is also survived by 4 brothers and 1 sister, Al Schmitt of Evansville, IN, Helen Simon of Haubstadt, IN., Urban Schmitt of Poseyville, IN., Jerry Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN., and Bernie Schmitt of Poseyville, IN. He also has 23 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, March 1st, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN, Fathers Tony Ernst, Paul Ferguson and Eugene Schmitt will be the celebrants. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call for visitation from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, Feb. 28th, 2006 at the Stodghill Funeral Home located on Hwy. 168 West in Fort Branch, IN, and again on Wednesday morning from 9:30 A.M. until service time at the church. A prayer service will be conducted on Tuesday evening by the church parish at 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Family requests any donations be made to the American Diabetes Association , American Heart Association or the American Parkinsons Disease Association. The family would also like to thank the Columbia Nursing Home Staff for Special Care and Attention that they gave their father this past 4 years.
