Obituary

Bernard (Bernie) Spindler, Sr. 66, passed away on September 26, 2016, surrounded by his family at the IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis.  Bernie was born to Adam (Junior) and Mary Elizabeth (Stratman) Spindler in Haubstadt, IN on August 27, 1950.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of St. John in Haubstadt.  He graduated in 1968 from North High School.   Bernie was a lifelong farmer and retired from Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 20. Bernie never met a stranger, and made many friends while collecting, restoring, and pulling antique tractors. He loved his family and especially loved being Papa to all of his grandchildren.

Bernie is survived by one son, Bernie Spindler, Jr. (Lori) of Snake Run; two daughters, Christy (Joe) Walker of Haubstadt, and Cheryl Spindler of Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren, Kaitlyn Roth and Kamden Walker, Madelyn, Kristen, Adam, and Audrey Spindler.  He is also survived by one brother, Wayne Spindler of Haubstadt; four sisters, Joyce Allen of Haubstadt, Carolyn (Wilfred) Goedde of St. Wendel, Donna (Dennis) Swader of Fort Branch, and Miriam Gauger of Evansville.  Bernie lost his wife of 44 years, Mary Sue (Reibel) Spindler on June 3, 2016.  Along with his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by a brother, Harold W. (Bill) Spindler and his stepfather Gilbert Arnold.

During his illness Bernie and family were grateful for the exceptional care he received from Drs. Maqbool Ahmed and Kenneth Kesler, and all of the love, support, and visitors during his long hospital stay in Indianapolis.

Visitation will be held at Stodghill Funeral Home in Ft. Branch, IN on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 2pm to 8 pm, with Rosary Service beginning at 2 pm.  Additional visitation will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016 from 9am to 10 am at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN.  The funeral Mass will begin at 10 am celebrated by Father Tony Ernst, Father Biju Thomas, and Deacon Charlie Koressel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
