Eugene “Gene” Burger, 95, of Haubstadt, Indiana, passed away on January 6, 2026, at Transcendent Healthcare in Owensville. He was born August 31, 1930, in Jasper, Indiana, to the late Louis and Agnes (Wehr) Burger.
Gene was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, Fort Branch VFW Post #2714, and the American Legion Post #194 in Haubstadt. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his service, Gene married his beloved wife, Bernadine “Bernie” Lamey, on June 6, 1954, and together they had a daughter, Lori. He worked as a manager for A&T Concrete for more than 35 years before retiring. In his leisure time, Gene enjoyed camping, fishing, spending time with his family—especially his grandson—and cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and Indiana University basketball team.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Bernie Burger; son-in-law, John Jenkins; brothers Robert and Melvin Burger; nephew, Shawn Vaughn; brothers-in-law, Robert Lamey and Paul Regener; and sister-in-law, Delores “Lolly” Vaughn.
He is survived by his daughter, Lori Jenkins, and grandson, Peyton Jenkins, both of Haubstadt; and sisters-in-law, Jeanette Burger of Evansville, Vicki Burger of Fort Branch, and Norma Regener of Haubstadt and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Haubstadt, officiated by Father Kenneth Betz. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stodghill Funeral Home in Fort Branch, with a rosary recited at 3:30 p.m. There will also be additional visitation at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m., followed by a military walk through. Military honors will take place at St. James Cemetery after mass, performed by the Veterans of Gibson County. Contributions in Gene’s honor may be made to St. James Catholic Church or Gibson County Animal Services. Condolences may be shared at stodghillfuneralhome.com.
