Frederick "Fred" Wilbert Pohl, 79, of Fort Branch passed away surrounded by his loving family on October 31, 2024, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN.
Fred was born on January 15, 1945, to the late Victor and Catherine (Watermann) Pohl in Haubstadt.
Fred was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, VFW #2714, American Legion #194, the Knights of St. John which he was a former Knight of the year, and Sheet Metal Workers Local 20. He was a sheet metal worker and blueprint artist for George Koch & Sons for 45 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, being outdoors, gardening vegetables, flowers, and trees, and playing clabber. He and Melba would can and freeze their vegetables and would donate fresh fruits and vegetables to the Lord's Pantry. He would pick up and shell pecans which he would donate to the Sisters of St. Benedict, he had donated 15 gallons this year. As a veteran, he had the distinct honor of going on the Honor Flight in April of 2024.
Fred is preceded in death by his siblings, Harold Pohl, Robert Pohl, Dr. Sister Victoria Pohl, Gene Pohl, Marilyn Ankenbrand, Victor Pohl Jr., and Kenneth Pohl; and a great-granddaughter, Nora Rose Berry.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 56 years whom he married on February 10, 1968, Melba (Schultheis) Pohl; 3 daughters, Stacy (David) Winstead of Owensville, Dawn (Mike) Young of Fort Branch, and Mindy Pohl of Fort Branch; grandchildren, Nathan (Kaycie) Winstead, Melanie (Michael) Stodghill, Marissa (Brandon) Berry, and Grant (Ericka) Young; great-grandchildren, Lyla and Zoey Winstead, Emerson Robicheaux, Abby, Brooke, Bentley, and Noah Stodghill, Wesley and Reese Berry, and Kaiden and Eleanor Young; and a brother Don (Sharon) Pohl of Fort Branch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Gary Kaiser as celebrant. Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and again on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until the military walk-through at 10:50 a.m. Recitation of the rosary will be performed by the Knights of St. John on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Military honors will be performed by the Veterans of Gibson County at Holy Cross Cemetery prior to entombment in the Holy Cross Mausoleum.
