John E. "Stogee" Weber, 92, of Ft. Branch, passed away, Friday, April 15, 2011 at Transcendent Care of Owensville. He was born, Jan. 3, 1919 in Evansville, IN to George and Lena (Market) Weber. He was a member of the Holy Cross Church, VFW Post 2714, and American Legion Post 194. He served in the US Army during WWII, patrolling the Alaskan Highway construction. He retired from Holy Cross Church and School, drove South Gibson school bus for 51 years, he was a sports fan, especially loved the Atlanta Braves baseball and Nascar- Jeff Gordon. He donated his time and equipment to help construct the baseball fields and maintain areas of the Ft. Branch Park. He created the Fort Branch Minor League program. After many years of volunteer service to the Kiwanis Park, he was appointed the park supervisor in 1965 which he held until his retirement in 2000. On June 6, 2000, the first baseball diamond in the park was dedicated John Weber Sr. Field.. He owned and operated Weber Trucking and Excavating and service station.. He is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mary H. (Beck) in 1991, he is also preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters; Malinda Dewig, Bernard, Leo, and Harold Weber, Loretta Scogins, Esther Dewig, and Charlotte May. He is survived by four children; John Jr. (Sandra) Weber of Owensville; Linda (Ralph) Hillyard and Jo (Larry) Dearing of Ft. Branch; and Richard (Marysue) Weber of Haubstadt, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted on Tuesday, Apr. 19, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Holy Cross Church, Father Tony Ernst will be the celebrant, entombment will be in Holy Cross Mausoleum. Visitation will be on Monday, Apr. 18, 2011 from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Stodghill Funeral Home located on Hwy. 168 West in Fort Branch, IN. and again from 9:00 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home on Tuesday. A Rosary will be recited by the church parish at 7:30 P.M. on Monday evening at the funeral home. Military services will be conducted by the VFW Post 2714 and the American Legion Post 194 at the cemetery on Tuesday. The family request donations be made to the Holy Cross School Endowment or to the Ft. Branch Park Fund.
