Obituary

Martha Elizabeth (Hertel) Schmitt, 81, of Haubstadt, IN passed away Sunday January 31, 2016 at home surrounded by her loving husband Jerry and family. She was born in Evansville, IN on July 11, 1934 to the late George and Theckla (Metzger) Hertel.

Martha was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN. She was a recipient of the Brute Award, member of the Alter Society, Bereavement team, St. Vincent De Paul, Oblate of St. Benedict, was a Eucharistic Minister and Quilter for Sts. Peter and Paul. She loved to sew, cook, play scrabble, go mushroom hunting, play the organ, and was a partner in farming with her husband Jerry.

She is preceded in death by a sister Genevieve Hertel and a brother Charles Hertel.

Martha is survived by her husband of 63 years Jerry, children Jenny Schmitt of Evansville, IN, Sue (Ed) Alldredge of Princeton, IN, Sandy (Jimmy) Marvel of Owensville, IN, Gary (Mary) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Karen (Bernie) Keil of Haubstadt, IN, Kevin (Elaine) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Rick (Lois) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Brenda (Gene) Spindler of Haubstadt, IN, Dennis Schmitt of Evansville, IN, 27 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, sister Mary Catherine Schmitt of Poseyville, IN, brother Clarence Hertel of St. Wendel, IN and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Fathers Tony and Sudhakar for their caring support and to Southern Care Hospice for their wonderful care of Martha.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday February 2, 2016 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN with Father Tony Ernst and Father Sudhakar Bhastati officiating. Services will be at 11:00 AM with visitation from 10:00 AM until service time. Burial will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at Stodghill Funeral Home in Fort Branch, IN on Highway 168 on Monday February 1, 2016 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and to the Sisters of St. Benedict.
