Obituary

Richard Paul Murnahan,76, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN.

A lifelong resident of Owensville, IN, Richard was born on November 30, 1948, to Esther Jane (Knowles) and Bob Murnahan. He attended Owensville School, graduating in 1966, and later attended Vincennes University. Richard honorably served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. His professional career included employment at Whirlpool and nearly three decades as maintenance supervisor at Owensville Nursing Home. He also dedicated many years as a firefighter and former fire chief with the Owensville-Montgomery Township Fire Department.

Mr. Murnahan enjoyed outdoor activities including raising horses, hunting, and fishing. He was known for his storytelling, practical jokes, and, most importantly, for cherishing time spent with family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther Jane Dickenson, Bob and Anna Murnahan; stepfather, Dr. Glenn O. Dickenson; sister, Karen Murnahan; and nephew, Bobby Kochersperger.

He is survived by his children, son Richard Murnahan II and daughter Janelle Matsel; longtime companion Linda Davis; grandchildren and their significant others, Hannah (Travis) Dobbins, Holley (Dakota) Murnahan, Shelby (Timothy) Schmits, Kyra (Lane) Matsel, Jake Matsel, Kaci (Michael) Hale, Levi Crabtree, Paige (Brad) Crabtree, and Kami (Jace) Crabtree; great-grandchildren Samuel, Jenson, and Josley; siblings, Sheila (Tony) Payton, Glenn (Gussie) Dickenson, and William (Marty) Murnahan; daughter-in-law Leah Murnahan; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, July 7, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Stodghill Funeral Home, officiated by Tim Johnson. Visitation will be held the same day from 1:00 p.m. until the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be rendered by the Veterans of Gibson County at the graveside at Owensville Cemetery.
