Rita C. Schmitt , 86, of Haubstadt, IN, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born to the late Carl and Gertrude (Titzer) Elpers on June 13, 1926 in Vanderburgh Co., IN.

She was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN, where she was a member of the altar society.  She was also a member of the VFW Post #2714 Womens Aux., and  St. Vincent Depaul.

Besides her parents, Rita is preceded in death by her husband, Anthony M. Schmitt, who passed away on Feb. 26, 2006, and 3 brothers, Marvin P., Joe, and Charles Elpers.

Rita is survived by 11 children and their spouses, Anthony E. (Margaret) Schmitt of St. Wendel, IN, Michael O. (Mary) Schmitt of Jasper, IN, Imogene (Don) Kurre of North Platt, Neb., Maggie (Steven) Nottingham of Poseyville, IN, Joe (Millie) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Walter (Sherry) Schmitt of Fort Branch, IN, Mary Ann (Steve) Nelson of Fort Branch, IN, Annette (Sam) Scott of Owensville, IN, Diana (Alan) Schmitt of Poseyville, IN, Cindy Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, and Jon (Beth) Schmitt of Fort Branch, IN, 25 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.  She is also survived by 2 brorhers and 1 sister, Marian Adler of Darmstadt, IN, Bill Elpers of Darmstadt, IN, and John Elpers Sr. of St. Wendel, IN.

A mass of Christian burial will be conducted on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN, with Father Tony Ernst and Father Eugene Schmitt the co-celebrants.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M at the Stodghill Funeral Home located on Hwy. 168 West in Fort Branch, IN, and again from 9:00 A.M. until service time at the church on Wednesday.  A rosary will be recited by the church parish at 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home Tuesday evening.  The family request that donations be meade to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the American Heart Association, and the American Diabetes Association.
