Thomas E. Schmitt, 78, of Haubstadt, IN, passed away at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN on Friday, February 4, 2022. He was born to the late Joseph and Geneva (Ziliak) Schmitt in Poseyville, IN on September 26, 1943.
Tom worked at Bristol Myers for over 30 years in refrigeration maintenance. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN and a former member of the Haubstadt Chamber of Commerce and the Knights of Columbus #2215. He spent his whole life farming and enjoyed toying around on his tractor.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Paul Schmitt, Kenneth Schmitt, and Marvin Schmitt.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Tanya (Freeman) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN; children, Julie (Pat) Clester of Frederick, MD, Darrin (Beth) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Mark (Amy) Schmitt of Charlestown, WV, and Kim (John) Schmitt of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Jeremiah (Jordan) Clester, Megan (Tyler) Abshagan, Kaitlyn Schmitt, Landon (Haley) Schmitt, Joseph Schmitt, and William Schmitt; great grandchildren, Lucy and Mack Abshagan and Harper Clester; and his canine friend, Maggie. Also survived by his sisters, Rose Vincent, Mary Winiger and brother, Edward and Fred Schmitt.
A Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt with Father Christopher Droste officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Stodghill Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, February 12, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Stodghill Funeral Home prior to visitation. Entombment at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Lord's Pantry or Food for the Poor.
