Jerome J. Schmitt, 90, of Haubstadt, IN, passed away at his home on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. He was born to the late Bernard “Ben” and Gertrude (Gries) Schmitt on October 7, 1932, in Vanderburgh County, Indiana.
Jerry is a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, the Oblates of St. Benedict, a strong supporter of St. Vincent De Paul, and a recipient of the Brute Award. He was a lifelong dairy and grain farmer on his family farm.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Martha (Hertel) Schmitt; and siblings, Joe Schmitt, Margaret Halbig, Ed Schmitt, Leo Schmitt, Wilfred Schmitt, Helen Simon, Raymond Schmitt, Anthony Schmitt, Urban Schmitt, Bernard Schmitt, and Al Schmitt.
He is survived by his 9 children, Jenny (Dan) DiLegge of Evansville, IN, Sue (Ed) Alldredge of Princeton, IN, Sandy (Jimmy) Marvel of Owensville, IN, Gary (Mary) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Karen (Bernie) Keil of Haubstadt, IN, Kevin (Elaine) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Rick (Lois) Schmitt of Haubstadt, IN, Brenda (Gene) Spindler of Haubstadt, IN, and Dennis (Lori) Schmitt of Evansville, IN; 30 grandchildren, and 55 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Andrew Thomas, Father Tony Ernst, and Father Eugene Schmitt as co-celebrants. There will be no visitation prior to Mass on Thursday. The family will process the casket to the front of church at 9:45 a.m. for a time of reflection before Mass. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stodghill Funeral Home in Fort Branch. Donations in his honor can be made to Sts.
