Virginia Tolson Obituary

Virginia Ruth Tolson, 93, of Fort Branch, IN, passed away at her home on December 20, 2023 attended by family and caregivers. Virginia was born to the late Stanley Edwin and Wilma Jeanette (Chapman) Dayton on October 29, 1930, in Washington, IN.

A committed follower of Christ, Virginia actively participated initially in the First Baptist Church in Washington, IN, followed by the Ft. Branch General Baptist Church, and, finally, Maumee General Baptist Church in Owensville.  Regular involvement included, among others, the Women's Missionary Society, annual Vacation Bible School, musical accompaniment and chaperone for Praise (a touring, youth, singing group), and other instrumental and vocal music.

One of the loves of her life was music. Piano and organ lessons and recitals at an early age became an outlet for a life-long love. At age 15, she became a church organist and pianist, roles which continued for 70 years.  She also taught piano and organ lessons, played for many area weddings and funerals, and accompanied contestants in high school band musician competitions.

In addition to music, Virginia enjoyed reading, traveling, cross stitch, knitting, and time with good friends and family. After her husband retired and became a part-time down-hill ski instructor, she, good-naturedly if not enthusiastically, became a skier by marriage.  Virgina was also a Cub Scout den mother, and a long-time Eastern Star member.

Virginia's life was marked by devotion to her family. She married Clarence Tolson, her high school sweetheart, on June 4, 1950.  She was a caring, devoted, and supportive wife who truly enjoyed life with her husband.  Beginning in Washington, their marriage took them to Lafayette, IN and Ft. Benning, GA before settling in Ft. Branch. Their marriage also brought them three children.  Virginia often remarked how she loved being a mother.  Grandchildren and then great grandchildren brought her much joy and new delight with every addition to the family.

Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Clarence Tolson; brother, Stanley Edwin Dayton, II; sister, Helen Jane Himsel; and nephew, Stanley Edwin Dayton, III.

Virginia is survived by her children, Debra (Stephen) Sacksteder of Washington, IN, David (Suzette) Tolson of Houston, TX, and Lori (Jeff) Walters of Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Megan Ferris, David Sacksteder, Drew Tolson, Faith Despard, Derek Tolson, Micah Walters, Elijah Walters and Anna Ashwill; great grandchildren, Logan, Zoe, Kaia, Macklin, Angie, Owen, Reid, Henry, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Ethan, Abigail, Andrew, Isaac, and Juniper.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023, at 1:00 pm CST at Stodghill Funeral Home in Fort Branch, IN, with Pastor Ken Reeder officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, December 29, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. The burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Washington, IN following services.
